Friday 12/9/11 – Mind Dump

These are the random thoughts flowing through my mind and some of the interesting things I’ve read online recently:

  • There are some great content marketing lessons here: “Favorite Content Marketing Lesson Of 2011.”  I don’t think my favorite one is particularly insightful, but some of the others are really great.
  • One I really liked was from Joe Chernov.  It  really resonated with me.  He said, “Co-creation is the single most important strategy a content marketer can undertake.”  You need to read his full thoughts and really sit and think about that idea.  It will be very important for your future as a content creator.
  • Speaking of co-creation, Trendwatching.com released some of their trends for 2012 and they said that “idle sourcing” will be a big trend in this upcoming year.  What is it?  “However the reality is that most consumers – while they might want to contribute – find that it’s too difficult or too much hassle.  Which is why you can expect to see more IDLE SOURCING initiatives in 2012: products and services that make it downright simple (if not effortless) to contribute to anything, from pinpointing roads in need of repairs to finding signs of extraterrestrial life. “
  • A random discovery I made recently was that George Washington Carver was not just an amazing inventor.  He used “content marketing” and education marketing to help revive the south.  He started a “School on Wheels,” and went out to farms so he could teach farmers how to revive soil by planting peanuts and sweet potatoes.  After teaching them, he went to his lab to create markets for these plants and ended up inventing 300 uses for the peanut and 118 uses for the sweet potato. Carver used content marketing (teaching/speaking) to not only revived the soil, but also revive the economy as well.
  • Finally got a copy of “You, Inc.: The Art Of Selling Yourself” by Harry Beckwith and Christine Clifford Beckwith.  I’ve been wanting to read it since I read Harry’s other books.  Really love his writing style (he uses great stories!) and way of thinking.  (NOTE: these are amazon affiliate links.  I almost always use them when mentioning books from there.  I figure they should reward me for promoting their site! 🙂  Feel free to search on Amazon yourself if you don’t want to click my links.)
  • Reading a great FREE ebook by Danny Iny called, “Engagement From Scratch.”  What is it about?  He used co-creation (crowdsourcing) to get the top experts at building online communities (around blogs, websites, their brands, etc.) to share their secrets.  It’s one of the lessons we all need to learn as content marketers, digital marketers, and “tribe” leaders.  Sign-up for your free copy now.
  • That’s all the rambling for now.  Have a good weekend.
